Why Safety Sensors Matter: When "Safety" Comes Before Automation

Safety Sensor สำคัญอย่างไร?

The integration of Automation and automated machinery in factories helps increase speed and reduce manual work processes. However, machinery with high-speed movements, rotating parts, pressing or cutting systems, or hazardous areas also requires appropriate safety systems in place.

One of the key devices is the Safety Sensor, designed to detect the access or presence of individuals in hazardous areas and send signals to the Safety system to halt operations or enter a safe state according to the machine's design. According to OMRON, safety sensors are used to stop machinery when the entry or presence of a person is detected while the machine is operating.

Safety Light Curtain and Working Principles

A common example is the Safety Light Curtain, which uses light beams to create a detection zone around risk points. If an operator steps into the designated area, the system can send a signal to the safety circuit to stop the machine's operation as designed.

The key difference between a safety sensor and a general workpiece detection sensor lies in their safety purpose and design. Therefore, general photoelectric sensors or proximity sensors should not be used as replacements for safety sensors in applications requiring direct safety functions. OMRON explicitly states that general photoelectric sensors are not designed to be used as safety devices for protecting human life.

What Do Safety Sensors Do in Automation Systems?

  • Detect access to hazardous areas: Prevent entry into high-risk machinery zones.
  • Protect operators: Minimize the risk of accidents while machinery is running.
  • Signal safety systems: Stop the machine according to specified conditions.
  • Create safe zones: Around machinery and production lines.
  • Support machine safety system design: Comply with international standards.
  • Adapt to different spaces: Select types suitable for specific on-site risks.

Selecting and Installing Safety Sensors

Choosing a safety sensor requires evaluating more than just the sensing range; factors such as the nature of the hazard zone, points of operator access, machine stopping distance, resolution, and installation methods must be considered to ensure the safety system aligns with actual risks.

Another critical issue is that safety sensor installation must be designed so that hazardous areas cannot be accessed by ducking under or bypassing the detection zone, as improper installation can prevent the system from fulfilling its intended safety purpose.

Safety in the Era of Factory Automation

For factories developing machinery or automation systems, safety should be considered right from the design phase rather than being added after the machinery is fully built.
